The Three Stooges--Revisited
A study in P.R. perception. Look at this (staged) photo, which I first saw on the WWL TV website. Which person best fits at the construction site? Blanco looks bored. She needs to take her sunglasses off. People who take pictures in sunglasses give the impression that they have something to hide. The hard hat is resting on top of her head, like she's wearing one three sizes too small. And you don't wear business formal to a construction site. Period. She looks about as natural there as she would wearing that outfit at a tractor pull.
Then there's Ray. What the hell are you looking at? Why do you look so bored and distant? It looks like you're not even paying attention. And who the hell told you to wear long-sleeve white shirt at a construction site? And who the hell told you to wear that stupid "wifebeater" underneath it?
But look at Ol' W! Now THAT'S presidential! Check him out! That shirt's about to fall out the back of his pants! And his sleeves are rolled up! Like he's just about to grab a hammer and start working! And he's clearly into what he's looking at. Look at that "contemplative" look on his face! He might even walk up to the foreman and give some advice!
To use W's own language in the pre-hurricane video, he is fully prepared.
People are going to look at that photo and have that impression. Look at how the president is down there, taking charge. And look at those two bumbling idiots next to him. Forget that many people think that this pretty much describes Blanco and Nagin. This photo isn't about them.
God, I hate P.R.

I don't know. The Prez is cocking his head to the side kind of like a clueless puppy that hears a new command for the first time. Or maybe that's the way I like to see it. As for Mr Chocolate and Kathleen "The Terminator" Blanco, they do look a little bored. Perhaps it's because they've been to the 9th Ward about kazillion times to show the thick skulled prez the lack of progress.
2 of the 3 stooges should have tied up the guy in the middle, dumped him in the breach to make sure it's good and filled for years to come. Afterall, he's much denser than clay.
I'm talking about the national impression. A lot of people who don't know better will think W is coming down there to tell "them yahoos" what to do
His cranium is big enough to fill the breach, that's for sure.
