Canal Street Line and Riverfront Line Streetcars at Carrollton Barn
The St. Charles Avenue Streetcar Line continues to be offline with the most optimistic projections not having the line back in service Uptown until the end of 2007--nearly two and a half years post-KTMB. Quite frankly that idea depresses me--and I'd say most people living in the Uptown neighborhoods along the line likely share my feeling. RTA buses running St. Charles Avenue and South Carrollton is just wrong. Work is being done towards recovery of the St. Charles Line (work seems to be recently concentrated towards the CBD) and the good news is that the Canal Street and Riverfront Line vehicles are in the process of being restored one-by-one (as they were flooded at the Canal Street Barn) at the Carrollton Barn. Following are some pictures I took this past Friday:
Riverfront Line Car #460, St. Charles Avenue Line Car #426 (?), and
Canal Street Line Car #2006--with numbering decals removed.

Riverfront Line Car #460 appears to be prepped for an upcoming new paint job. Riverfront Line Car #461 (not housed at the Carrollton Barn) has already been repainted the future livery of the Riverfront Line: blue. I haven't seen that car yet on the Riverfront Line, but I have a photograph of it I purchased from an exhibtor at the first Mid City Art Market held at Palmer Park back in October. St. Charles Avenue Line: Green. Canal Street Line: Red. Riverfront Line: Blue. Perhaps an Elysian Fields Line can be purple . . .

I'd like Purple for the Elysian Fields line any day. Or when the day comes when we actually HAVE an Elysian Fields line...
I've noticed that work on the stretch of St Charles between Lee Circle and Napoleon has stepped up a bit lately.
When last we heard from RTA, they were planning to put the St Charles line between Canal and Lee Circle back in action before Christmas.
Could their plans have become more ambitious?
You bring hope to this Gentilly boy's heart with mention of an Elysian Fields line--New Orleans' River-to-Lake thoroughfare. Tie UNO and the Lakefront to the Quarter much as Tulane and Audubon Park have always been.
Just a couple of days ago I was commenting on a plan to plant oak trees on the Elysian Fields neutral ground from Prentiss to Robt. E. Lee by mentioning that someone might want to consider what right-of-way would be needed for a streetcar line, because oak trees are practically forever. LOL
Take your time New Orleans. I am sure tourists that are thingking of coming down won't be interested in seeing and riding the trolleys. Especially since there in all the travel commercials and brochures.
Can't you guys make some phone calls and start turning the Heat up on this? Who is responsible for this? Why cant dollar bill donate 10,000 dollars to help this project?
In reading your comments about the different colors of streetcars, I'm sorry to have to report that NORTA has obviously decided to keep the Riverfront line red. I have seen car 459 at Carrollton Barn recently with a brand new coat of red paint. I for one encouraged NORTA to go with different colors for the three lines, St. Charles green, Riverfront red and Canal a royal blue, but was told it was easier to stock the two colors. It was Mayor Morial who liked the red on the Riverfront, encouraged RTA to do Canal in the same color......
